Aston Shield
The Aston Shield is presented in the spirit of Tilly Aston, whom the seat of Aston is named after.
This special award program acknowledges the valuable contribution of students from schools throughout the Federal electorate of Aston.
Students are recognised for their:
– high standard in attitude and achievement;
– participation in all school activities with a good attitude;
– full commitment to the ethos of the school;
– an awareness of others and their needs; and,
– positive contribution to the school community over a number of years.
The selection process excludes a student’s other leadership responsibilities.
A selection panel of teachers and school staff from each school chooses the successful students of each year’s Aston Shield.
It is presented annually by the Federal Member for Aston, Alan Tudge MP, at the school’s end of year graduation/speech night or final assembly.
Alan presents an individual shield to each successful student and a larger, perpetual shield displaying the engraved name of each year’s successful recipient, is presented to the school for display in a prominent position.
All schools within the Federal electorate of Aston are welcome to participate in the Aston Shield program. Currently 36 out of 44 schools choose to participate.
Matilda Ann Aston (11 December 1873 – 1 November 1947), better known as Tilly Aston, was a blind Australian writer and teacher, who founded the Victorian Association of Braille Writers, and later went on to establish the Association for the Advancement of the Blind, with herself as secretary. She is remembered for her achievements in promoting the rights of vision impaired people.

Our School Captains and Vice Captains are chosen by the Principal at the end of the school year. Candidates are required to present a speech to all members of staff highlighting why they are the best candidate for the leadership team, with two girls and two boys chosen to represent Templeton the following year. The School Captains and Vice Captains have a responsibility to not only lead the school cohort, but to host a weekly assembly and represent Templeton at network events.
